The Year of Self Love

I am a huge advocate for self love and always putting your wellbeing before anything in life, but I don’t always practice what I preach. So this year I have decided that self love and looking after ME, is my number one priority.

Self love is an extremely important factor in anyone’s life and it influences you in every aspect of your day, week and for as long as you can imagine. Everyone has a different definition for self love, but for me, it is a state of appreciation and respect for yourself and personally this is a major issue in my life. 

Here is a list of things I want to practice in 2020 in order to reach my ultimate state of happiness with myself:

1. Practice good self care

Self-care is a very important aspect of anyone’s life, and I’m definitely one for a good reset and taking care of! 

Even if it means just grabbing all of my pamper products, running a huge bubble bath and relaxing for 30/45 minutes whilst reading a book with nobody around – it is going to bring me insane levels of relaxation and ensure that I’m having some time away from the social/online world so I can think about my own feelings for a while.

2. Doing things that bring me joy

Over the course of 2019, I found so many new things that bring me joy and happiness! Things I would gladly do 24/7 instead of working 😉

Some of these things include:

  • Crocheting
  • Jigsaws
  • Writing
  • Making lists
  • Zumba

I reckon there are a few more but I can’t think of them on the spot…. oops. Sometime near the start of 2019, I told my mum that my mind was working overtime and I needed something to distract me that wasn’t electronic. To my surprise, she said she had the perfect thing for me! She left the room and brought back a “How-to-crochet” kit with some plastic hooks and different coloured thread. After about an hour, I had taught myself how to do a single crochet, double crochet, treble and a double treble and I made two flowers and a little love heart. By the time I had finished, I was on Amazon ordering metal hooks and better quality wool – to this day I still have a large bag of wool and projects I have started and not finished. 

My point being that, crocheting gave me so much joy and relaxation and I want to prioritise these activities and not care if they come across as “weird” or “unusual”.

Make time for whatever brings you joy.

3. Fill myself with good food!

Now I don’t mean all the unhealthy foods that I consider “good foods”. I mean, filling my body with nourishing food that brings me endless amounts of energy and makes me thrive! 

I always go through phases of cooking super healthy food, but I always slip back into old habits and once I’ve caved, I find it extremely difficult to go back to the healthy stuff.

One factor I’m going to reinforce is that I don’t have to change everything at once! Even if it is just adding something healthy to each meal, or substituting that can of Irn Bru for a large glass of water. Eventually I will crave the healthy stuff and I won’t be such an issue getting rid of the unhealthy stuff. 

I really want to focus on learning what my body needs nutrition wise and feed it what makes it feel GOOOOOOD.

4. Surround myself with people that love and encourage me

During 2018 + 2019, I said goodbye to a lot of people who were bringing negativity into my life. You never realise how someone can affect you until you no longer have them in your life and you come to terms with how much you actually needed to do it. Entering 2020 with the best people by my side, and you all know exactly who you are! 

I will no longer count the number of people I have in my life, but instead, the quality of the relationship and ensure that I have as much fun and crazy times with them as possible!

5. Give up caring about what others think

This is a tricky one for me. Because no matter how many times I tell myself I don’t care, I find myself subconsciously doing things that prove that I DO care. Which is why I really want to work on it!

On Christmas day, I filmed myself doing my makeup and intended on posting it on IGTV as a Cosy GRWM because I felt like doing something different and I really enjoy timelapses. I downloaded the video, edited it and added a cool soundtrack and just as I was about to upload it, I remembered all the people that follow my account that might think “pfft, what is she doing” – I didn’t post the video. 

I really do regret not posting the video! If I can’t post things freely, how to I expect to move on in life and pursue my dreams! 


2020 is going to be the year of positivity, self love, laughter and so much self improvement. And I 100% mean it!

  1. Self care is so vital to our mental, physical, and spiritual health. I love how you included a mix of ways that you take care of yourself, from the people that you surround yourself with to the time you take doing what you love.

    PS I was totally excited to see jigsaw puzzles on your list because they are 💯 underrated as tools to relax!!

      Jigsaws are very underrated – I never realised how good they were until the end of last year, I felt like I was in a completely different world.


  2. I love this vibe! Totally agree with all of the things you can do for self-love. Do things you enjoy and know when to say no. Most important thing is to take care of yourself so you feel good overall! Sending you lots of positivity!

  3. YAS girl! Couldn’t agree more, self care is so important for our quality of life and overall well-being! I also need to stop caring what others think, I feel as I get older it only gets worse
